Review of “Joy”

The sixth episode of the fifth season of House was on last night and it continued a recent trend of good episodes after a relatively slow start to the season.  The title of the episode was Joy and it featured two patients of the week.  All week long, Fox ran promos saying this is an episode you just can’t miss.  Well, I wouldn’t have went that far but it definitely was a great episode especially for long-term House viewers.

The episode started off with a man surrounded by numerous coffee machines.   This in itself would be strange but even stranger was the way the man was acting.   I was anticipating a House style fake out when his daughter entered the picture, figuring they’d show us a man with a potential illness and then have the daughter fall ill.   That was not the case however, as the man showed signs of memory loss and appeared to be in some kind of trance as we hit the opening credits.

After the credits rolled, the team began to diagnose the man’s illness which included the fact he was sleep walking and also snorting cocaine while asleep.   Doesn’t sound like healthy behavior to me.    The team determined the man needs a kidney transplant and his daughter agreed to donate hers to the cause.   Once she did however, she showed the the same symptoms including sleep walking.   House figured out that they were actually faking their identities, and were actually of Arab descent and not the caucasian descent they would appear to be.  They were both inflicted with a Mediterranean disease.   With some medicine and a kidney transplant both father and daughter would be fine.

While this was going on, there was another patient involved in this episode.  A pregnant woman who decided to give Cuddy her baby upon birth.    When House hears this, he begins to try and convince Cuddy it’s a bad decision and that she isn’t ready to be a mother.   Cuddy doesn’t listen however and continues to plan to adopt the baby.   The mother then became ill and the baby needed to be delivered prematurely via a cesarian section.   House continued to try and convince Cuddy it was a bad decision even during the procedure.   She continued to disregard him and both of their attentions turned to the baby who was not crying upon birth.   While they feared the worst, the baby began to cry and relief could be seen on everyone’s face.

Cuddy went home and started to paint her nursery in anticipation of finally being a mother.    When Cuddy returned to the hospital, she spoke with the birth mother who informed her she had decided to keep the baby after all.   This was a devastating blow to Cuddy of course and she goes home to be alone.   To everyone’s surprise, House showed up to console her while informing her she can find another baby to adopt and would make a great mother.   This contradicted everything he had said to her all episode long once again showing House has an emotional side even if he keeps it hidden.     Cuddy pointed out the fact, he was contradicting himself and he kisses her sending shockwaves through many fans worldwide.

Overall, I give this episode an A-.   It moved the story along and was well put together.  What did you all think of it?
